CITIES & REGIONAL
MELAKA & GEORGETOWN
In year 2008, the World Heritage Committee inscribed both Melaka and George Town as a World Heritage Site (WHS). Subsequently, as part of the inscription, Malaysian Government as the State Party responsible for WHS were required to prepare and submit to World Heritage Committee a Conservation Management Plan outlining detailed measures on ways to conserve and promote the conservation of both tangible and intangible heritage properties and elements within the WHS.
The Conservation Management Plan provides guidance on the promotion of conservation, preservation, rehabilitation, restoration and reconstruction in the WHS. Its broad objective is to facilitate the proper management of the WHS including the use of all buildings and lands. It also includes measures that would enhance the integration of the of physical environment with the socio-cultural and economic well being of its existing and future communities.
Preparation of the Comprehensive Management Plan adopts a participatory approach, taking into consideration the view of communities and stakeholders. Focus group discussion and design charrette were held to obtain perceptions and opinion of stakeholders.
